Definitions

The primary objective of a placement opportunity, for a student or young practitioner, is to gain experience and build your CV (resume). Pay should be a secondary consideration. That said, some placements do offer a salary.

  • Placements (sandwich year): Also known as industrial placements. These are part of the degree programme, are for a full year, are advertised nationally and pay a salary.
  • Placements: Term used to describe any informal agreement between a volunteer and a supervisor. Length of service is negotiable, to suit both parties (eg one day a week, one week during university vacation). A salary is not payable, but students can often claim back travel expenses.
  • Adoptions: Term we use to distinguish informal placements from the formal, contractual 'industrial placement' that is a part of the degree programme.
  • Internship: Term used in North America to describe the range of workplace learning opportunities listed above.

Graduate vacancies at Diffusion

Graduate Executive; £20,000 + benefits, London. September 2008 Start

At Diffusion we naturally believe that Public Relations offers one of the most stimulating, rewarding and intellectually challenging career choices for graduates. We’ll be opening applications for our 2009 Graduate Programme in December, but due to impressive client growth we have an opportunity for two exceptional graduates to join the Diffusion team this September.

So what are we looking for? Well we’re not ashamed to say our standards are very high - you will need a First or 2:1 degree from a leading University. As you’ll be joining an agency at the leading edge of innovation in digital communication, an enthusiastic and natural affinity to all things online is essential.

PR is an industry where people buy people, so as well as holding all these attributes you also need to be likeable, engaging, and credible, generate trust and ooze common sense and creativity. As we said, our standards are high. So what do we offer? Firstly a commitment to training and development. At Diffusion you won’t spend most your time scanning coverage and writing reports. We will ensure you receive intensive education in PR practice so you can also quickly start making a genuine and satisfying contribution to the success of client campaigns. As well as internal training from some of the leading PR practitioners in the UK, we also invest in external training in areas such as video production and web design, equipping you with the skills that are essential for pioneering PR today.

Our culture is supportive and open and we thrive on creative ideas, entrepreneurial spirit and humour. By joining a young and rapidly growing agency, you will be perfectly placed to enjoy rapid career and earnings growth. Do you think you measure up? Then please send your CV and a covering letter to Daljit Bhurji, Managing Director, Diffusion at daljit.bhurji@diffusionpr.com.

Press Officer, MOBO Awards

The CIPR have teamed up with the MOBO Awards to offer a Press Officer work placement/internship to a final or sandwich year student available between June/July and October this year. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who would like to get into music/entertainment PR and could lead to a permanent job.

The MOBO Awards are for music of black origin – soul/r&b, hiphop, reggae, gospel, jazz – and are screened each year by the BBC and promoted via their 1Xtra brand. They’ve been running since 1996 and are attended by both British and international artists. Last year Amy Winehouse, Ne-Yo and Kano performed and the awards were hosted by Shaggy and Jamelia. More details about last year’s awards: BBC

I’ve asked the MOBO organisers to take the end of term into account and so they need only submit up to 1500 words by the end of April. We’ll then shortlist and invite these applicants to the CIPR to present their ideas in more detail at the start of June. The successful person will need to be able to start work in London quite quickly.

The detail on what MOBO is looking for and some guidance in making the application is here: CIPR MOBO

Update: Deadline for applications is now Friday 9 May.

Account Executive, Lucre, Richmond office

Lucre has been going for over two years and in that time we’ve enjoyed a meteoric rise. We started out in Leeds where we’ve grown to a team of 12, but as we’ve attracted a great deal of business from the South too it made sense for us to expand there without delay.

We’re looking for really switched on people starting out in PR but with some demonstrable experience in a fast paced environment. Our staff don’t all come from a PR background, in fact we encourage a broad range of skills, which go to make up our talented and quirky staff base. If you’re smart, switched on, interested in news and views and helping to make a real difference in a growing business then come and talk to us.

I’d like to see CVs and a covering letter explaining why you think you’d be right for Lucre and what attracts you to us. I’d also like to see a press release (no more than 1 page) on the launch of the pencil (imagine it was just invented). Email sally@lucrecommunications.com

Graduates required - PR / broadcast / research

We are a specialist broadcast consultancy, based in London, on the look out for the highest calibre graduate candidates for Account Executive roles within the growing teams in the editorial, promotions and research divisions of our companies (Markettiers4dc, Sound & Tickbox.net).

There is no such thing as a typical day for a team member at AE level in our business. It could involve coming up with ideas for an existing client to support their marketing and PR campaigns, it could be contributing towards a pitch document and being part of the pitching team for a new client, or reporting back to a client on the progress of their broadcast schedule, or sitting in and producing a series of interviews or webchat from one of our five broadcast studios in-house at our media-style offices in Clerkenwell, London where there's always a buzz. They mustn't be phased at having to deal with celebrities for a day at a time or MD level spokespeople, and should be able to ensure that they stick to message and deliver calls to action as part of their interview activity, and confident enough to provide advice to clients on the best strategic approach to adopt.

One thing's for sure, you'll be thrown in at the deep end, supported by your team-mates, and will gain hands on experience that your fellow graduates can only dream of. Why? Because we've been there ourselves, and recognise that the way to nurture talent is to provide it with opportunities and support it when the stretch is just that bit beyond your means. In our opinion, the best environment for many people is a learning environment which is why for many of our graduates the first year goes by before they've had chance to blink......and the second, and the third and the fourth.

Luckily, we're at the cutting edge of our industry, we really are, so by the time you're ready to move on to that next role, we've created it and you're career has yet another rung of the ladder to step on to! We were the first company in the country to build a dedicated webchat studio for clients to have access to for editorial purposes, to create an online research panel for PR agencies to create story angles via, and are the only agency in the country to offer an integrated broadcast service with the combination of offerings that we do! We currently employ 82 members of staff, many of whom joined us as graduates and who revel in the London life and the bond they've built with the instant family they've got through work. We are proud of our clients (who wouldn't be with names like Vodafone, COI, Lloyds TSB, Sainsbury's and Whitbread on their books, let alone most of the top 100 PR agencies!) and the work that we do for them.

If you have candidates who are interested in a PR or research career, ask them to send their CV to:

Karen Brooks at karen.brooks@markettiers4dc.com as we're currently in the process of interviewing for our next team of graduates.

Best Wishes

Karen Brooks

External Affairs Officer (Leeds)

Salary: c£25-30k

The National Australia Group is not your ‘usual’ bank, so don’t expect the ‘usual’ banking environment.

We’re challenging conventional banking models and are making ambitious moves that are redefining the future of banking through our Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank brands in the UK.

Placements at Revolver (Leeds)

During 2006 Revolver offered a number of work experience placements to students of varying ages and levels of experience. Work experience students have been welcomed by the team as their involvement tends to relieve workloads, particularly at AE level where students can play a particularly useful role in executing crucial media relations and ‘housekeeping’/admin tasks. Particularly successful placements, usually those of under-graduate calibre, have had the vision to get involved in wider tasks and have been given the opportunity to get involved in the project management of bigger campaigns and big media relations activities.

To meet departmental targets and objectives in 2007, new objectives, roles and responsibilities will be set for the team. We will need to work smarter and take empowerment to the next level through each individual ‘stepping up’ to the challenge, taking on more responsibility, working independently and supporting those above by driving through tasks upon initiative etc. This will provide a greater need for the support and assistance of those work experience students that can fit seamlessly into the department by competently completing the tasks set for them. As such, it is important that students meet a high standard – understand the working practices of a consumer PR agency, grasp the importance of trends and have their fingers on the pulse. However, more importantly, they should possess drive, enthusiasm and a passion for PR.

Benefits to students

  • Valuable work experience for student’s CV.
  • Real case studies for students to add to their portfolio.
  • Introduction to Revolver and how it fits into the Propaganda jigsaw (via Revolver Creds presentation)
  • Valuable media training (for long-term placements).
  • Involvement in creative campaigns for high-profile consumer brands.
  • Insights into the department’s trend generation work and its importance for consumer campaigns
