Definitions

The primary objective of a placement opportunity, for a student or young practitioner, is to gain experience and build your CV (resume). Pay should be a secondary consideration. That said, some placements do offer a salary.

Placements (sandwich year): Also known as industrial placements. These are part of the degree programme, are for a full year, are advertised nationally and pay a salary.

Placements: Term used to describe any informal agreement between a volunteer and a supervisor. Length of service is negotiable, to suit both parties (eg one day a week, one week during university vacation). A salary is not payable, but students can often claim back travel expenses.

Adoptions: Term we use to distinguish informal placements from the formal, contractual 'industrial placement' that is a part of the degree programme.

Internship: Term used in North America to describe the range of workplace learning opportunities listed above.

Graduates required - PR / broadcast / research

We are a specialist broadcast consultancy, based in London, on the look out for the highest calibre graduate candidates for Account Executive roles within the growing teams in the editorial, promotions and research divisions of our companies (Markettiers4dc, Sound & Tickbox.net).

There is no such thing as a typical day for a team member at AE level in our business. It could involve coming up with ideas for an existing client to support their marketing and PR campaigns, it could be contributing towards a pitch document and being part of the pitching team for a new client, or reporting back to a client on the progress of their broadcast schedule, or sitting in and producing a series of interviews or webchat from one of our five broadcast studios in-house at our media-style offices in Clerkenwell, London where there's always a buzz. They mustn't be phased at having to deal with celebrities for a day at a time or MD level spokespeople, and should be able to ensure that they stick to message and deliver calls to action as part of their interview activity, and confident enough to provide advice to clients on the best strategic approach to adopt.

One thing's for sure, you'll be thrown in at the deep end, supported by your team-mates, and will gain hands on experience that your fellow graduates can only dream of. Why? Because we've been there ourselves, and recognise that the way to nurture talent is to provide it with opportunities and support it when the stretch is just that bit beyond your means. In our opinion, the best environment for many people is a learning environment which is why for many of our graduates the first year goes by before they've had chance to blink......and the second, and the third and the fourth.

Luckily, we're at the cutting edge of our industry, we really are, so by the time you're ready to move on to that next role, we've created it and you're career has yet another rung of the ladder to step on to! We were the first company in the country to build a dedicated webchat studio for clients to have access to for editorial purposes, to create an online research panel for PR agencies to create story angles via, and are the only agency in the country to offer an integrated broadcast service with the combination of offerings that we do! We currently employ 82 members of staff, many of whom joined us as graduates and who revel in the London life and the bond they've built with the instant family they've got through work. We are proud of our clients (who wouldn't be with names like Vodafone, COI, Lloyds TSB, Sainsbury's and Whitbread on their books, let alone most of the top 100 PR agencies!) and the work that we do for them.

If you have candidates who are interested in a PR or research career, ask them to send their CV to:

Karen Brooks at karen.brooks@markettiers4dc.com as we're currently in the process of interviewing for our next team of graduates.

Best Wishes

Karen Brooks

Director

External Affairs Officer (Leeds)

Salary: c£25-30k

The National Australia Group is not your ‘usual’ bank, so don’t expect the ‘usual’ banking environment.

We’re challenging conventional banking models and are making ambitious moves that are redefining the future of banking through our Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank brands in the UK.

Placements at Revolver (Leeds)

During 2006 Revolver offered a number of work experience placements to students of varying ages and levels of experience. Work experience students have been welcomed by the team as their involvement tends to relieve workloads, particularly at AE level where students can play a particularly useful role in executing crucial media relations and ‘housekeeping’/admin tasks. Particularly successful placements, usually those of under-graduate calibre, have had the vision to get involved in wider tasks and have been given the opportunity to get involved in the project management of bigger campaigns and big media relations activities.

To meet departmental targets and objectives in 2007, new objectives, roles and responsibilities will be set for the team. We will need to work smarter and take empowerment to the next level through each individual ‘stepping up’ to the challenge, taking on more responsibility, working independently and supporting those above by driving through tasks upon initiative etc. This will provide a greater need for the support and assistance of those work experience students that can fit seamlessly into the department by competently completing the tasks set for them. As such, it is important that students meet a high standard – understand the working practices of a consumer PR agency, grasp the importance of trends and have their fingers on the pulse. However, more importantly, they should possess drive, enthusiasm and a passion for PR.

Benefits to students

  • Valuable work experience for student’s CV.
  • Real case studies for students to add to their portfolio.
  • Introduction to Revolver and how it fits into the Propaganda jigsaw (via Revolver Creds presentation)
  • Valuable media training (for long-term placements).
  • Involvement in creative campaigns for high-profile consumer brands.
  • Insights into the department’s trend generation work and its importance for consumer campaigns
